When.... While cleaning out
some old files, one of Sticks & Dirt’s
agents found some information that dates back to
the beginning of what is known today as North
Cape May. This got us thinking and
digging. So we thought that we would share with
you some of the information we found.
North Cape May Development Company
began construction of “North Cape May” in 1951
and Phase 2 beginning in late 1952. Original
intention was to build homes to be used
primarily for summer vacation living, attracting
people from the Philadelphia-Camden metropolitan
area, but before long it was discovered that
more people were making this new area their
permanent year round home.
Another discovery was that people from
communities bordering on North Cape May were
purchasing homes here and the probable reason
was that taxes here were, at the time, a
fraction of what they were in other shore
communities.
With the inauguration of the North
Cape May and Lewes, DE, ferry service starting
in 1964, the development company anticipated a
“Boom” for the North Cape May Development. There
was an increase for the year round home, but not
for the vacation home. Today, the area has
almost an equal amount of year round and
seasonal residents.
